Dick and Pam, who became innkeepers at the Hummingbird Inn in July 2003, came to Goshen from Nashville, Tennessee, Dick leaving his senior editor position at American Profile magazine and Pam departing her position as manager of an allergist’s office. Before moving to Nashville, they hailed from Shelburne Falls, a rural town in the northern Berkshires in western Massachusetts, where they lived from the mid-1980s until 2000. Prior to settling in New England, each of them grew up in different parts of the Midwest, Pam in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Kansas, Dick in Illinois. Both were involved in civic affairs in Massachusetts, Pam active in education and founder of a local Teen Center, Dick as owner/editor of a local weekly newspaper. Both participated in a community drama group and assisted in the restoration of a 100-year-old theater. The two of them wrote, produced, directed, and acted in dinner theater presentations in Massachusetts. They continue this tradition today with their "ghost" and "murder mystery" dinner theaters. 

Pam has served as secretary and Southern Shenandoah representative on the board of directors for the Bed and Breakfast Association of Virginia and Dick has chaired the Hospitality Committee for the Lexington/Rockbridge County Chamber of Commerce. They share the cooking and gardening at the Hummingbird Inn and both feel the grandest part of innkeeping is the people they get to meet and know. The Shenandoah Valley area of rural Virginia and its surrounding mountains have become a haven for them and they enjoy the area’s rich history and its outdoor opportunities.

They enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, and traveling anywhere, and Dick sneaks off with his kayak when the weather allows. They have just published a book, Notes from an Innkeeper's Journal, about their experiences as innkeepers.
