Fall is in the air and with that comes a plethora of fun outdoor events and festivals sure to get you excited for the autumn season. The town of Lexington offers not only the classic corn mazes and pumpkin patches but adds excitement with events at local wineries and historic venues. With so many activities planned for the month of October, you are sure to have a full calendar of events to keep you entertained.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Stonewall Jackson House, set the date of October 19th on your calendar for the annual Apple Day Celebration. Participation is free with admission and includes freshly pressed cider, live music, homemade ginger snaps and games and crafts for the children. The event is from 11:00am to 3:00pm. While on site, be sure to schedule a tour of the house to learn more about Jackson’s career and family life. The house is located at 8 Washington Street in downtown Lexington.
On the second Friday of the month, May through October, Lexington Valley Vineyards encourages visitors to bring their best friend, their dog! Wine and Wags will be held on October 11th from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. Dogs are welcome to enjoy a walk in the vineyards with their owners and stay with their owners on the deck for a free wine tasting.
It wouldn’t feel like fall without a family trip to the corn maze. The corn maze at the Natural Bridge of Virginia will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in October. LOVE artwork is this year’s design for the maze and includes six acres of family fun. While making your way through the maze, search for the hidden scarecrows and LOVE artwork for a chance at big prizes like a two night getaway for a family of four and annual passes to the Natural Bridge. In addition to the corn maze and scenic hayrides, there are plenty of fun family games including a bean bag toss and a corn kernel filled sandbox. Snacks and beverages will be on site for purchase.
On October 5th, Rockbridge Vineyards will be hosting the 21st Annual Harvest Festival from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. A $5.00 admission includes wine tasting and complimentary souvenir glass, $3.00 for non-drinkers. Other events for the day will include live music, hayrides and grape stomping. Lunch will be available for purchase. Visitors are invited to bring chairs and blankets and enjoy the day helping them celebrate their anniversary. Lunch will be available for purchase.
Another great way to get into the spirit of the season is a Lexington Ghost Tour. Offered Fridays and Saturdays in October, the Ghost Tour starts at The Lexington Visitors Center and eerie tales are told on the hour and a half tour by professional guides. Admission is $13.00 for adults and $6.00 for children. Reservations are required.
When making plans to enjoy the Lexington, Virginia events of the season, there’s no need to leave your furry friends at home. The Hummingbird Inn is a pet friendly Bed and Breakfast that welcomes dogs and cats. Each pet is welcomed with a gift basket including a bowl for food or water, placemat, towel for cleaning off wet feet, clean up bags for outside bathroom breaks and also books for bedtime reading.
